The U.S. Student Program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and routine tasks, allowing the grantee to appreciate others’ viewpoints and beliefs and how they do things, and the way they think. Through engagement in the community, the individual will interact with their hosts on a one-to-one basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity, and intellectual freedom, thereby promoting mutual understanding. Grantees typically conduct their studies/research projects while gaining international experience during a nine-month academic exchange.
Testimonials
-
Matthew Aruch U.S. Student 2019, Associação Floresta Protegida
Through a 2019 Fulbright I explored transnational research and education relationships between the Mebêngôkre-Kayapo indigenous people in Brazil.
-
Ketan Brodeur U.S. Student 2019, Universidade Federal do Pará
Think about submitting a proposal to less frequented areas of Brazil and living with a host family. Because I went on the less-traveled path to the Brazilian Amazon, I was completely immersed in Portuguese and the local culture.
-
Vanessa Castaneda U.S. Student 2018, Universidade Federal da Bahia
Fulbright gave me the opportunity to carry out careful, community-based research for my doctoral studies. More importantly though, I was able to create foundational relationships that I will forever nourish.
-
Kainen Bell U.S. Student 2018, Faculdade de Olinda
Submit a proposal you are passionate about. I was first rejected and instead of quitting, I re-applied with a research project I cared about. This led to life-changing experiences and finding a permanent job with a local NGO.
